If you have an old dishwasher that you want to use but it does not work properly, you can bring it back to life. For the repairs, you can either do them yourself or hire a repair technician to do them for you. You can also get the interior clean so you can start using it to clean your dishes.
Common Dishwasher Repairs
There could be many things wrong with your dishwasher. Some of these are simple fixes you can do on your own. Others are more difficult and you should contact an experienced technician.
Some of the most common problems you may find with your dishwasher include:
Will Not Turn On
If your dishwasher will not turn on at all, it could be the power unit, which looks like a small box. First, turn off the power to the dishwasher from your breaker box. Locate the dishwasher power unit, which is usually wired into the bottom or rear of the dishwasher. Unscrew the screws and lift the unit out. Open it up and check the wiring for any loose connections, breaks, or corrosion. It may just pop open or you may need to remove screws. If everything looks fine, then the unit is probably just old and will need to be replaced.
Not Draining Properly
If the dishwasher is not draining properly, the drain hose may be kinked up. Refer to the user's manual that came with the dishwasher to see where this drain hose is located. If you notice that it is kinked, try to straighten it out with your hands. If you cannot get it straight, it will need to be replaced.
If you notice water running out of the bottom of your dishwasher, in most cases it is a problem with the drainage hose. You will find this hose behind the kick plate located at the bottom of the dishwasher. The kick plate is usually screwed in. Remove these screws and you will see the drainage hose. Look at the hose to see if it has any cracks in it, and make sure it is tightly connected. If everything looks fine, the problem could be that heating element is loose.
These are just some of the problems you may be having. Since the dishwasher is old, you may want to hire a repair technician to check it out anyway, and while he or she is there, they can repair any problems it may be having.
